Pipestone National Monument

National Treasure Visited #25 on Shea’s Ultimate American Quest
First Experienced During Quest On: July 25, 2024

Pipestone National Monument, located in southwestern Minnesota, preserves the culturally rich and sacred quarries of red pipestone, or catlinite, long used by Native American tribes to carve ceremonial pipes. For centuries, Indigenous peoples from across North America have traveled to this site to obtain the soft red stone, which holds spiritual significance and is often associated with prayer and peace.

Designated as a national monument in 1937, Pipestone serves not only as a cultural touchstone but also as a symbol of respect for Native traditions. The site is still actively quarried today by tribal members under regulated permits, continuing a living tradition that connects modern generations to their ancestors.

In addition to its cultural significance, the monument protects striking prairie landscapes, rare plants, and a beautiful waterfall—Winnewissa Falls—along its interpretive trail. Pipestone National Monument embodies the country’s commitment to preserving sacred Indigenous heritage while educating the public about its importance.
