I'm back on the road and to the Sonoran desert after leaving Colorado and driving for two days, with a few stops along the way to eat and explore the El Malpais National Monument.
With only one night in New Mexico, I had to get something with green chilis. The local chain, Blake's, was just the thing to get a burger covered with delicious hatch green chilies.
Established about 1876 as the Bucher Saloon, Glur's Tavern is the oldest continuously operated tavern west of the Missouri River and I had to go and give it a try.
There's a fantastic little bit of BLM land just outside of the City of Rocks that offers free camping. There is easy access into the city and, of course, into Almo for a beer and a burger.
After a quick drive through the Mount Hood National Forest, I pulled into Sandy, Oregon, quite hungry, and as I drove through downtown, I found a place close to my heart.
My boys and I have loved this place since it opened. The owners are fantastic, and the executive chef is amazingly creative. And you can't beat Jason's innovative, delicious beers!
What I really needed for the beginning months of this adventure was a return to where my love of hiking started while I was a student at the University of Kansas in the 1980's.
