Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial

National Treasure Visited #32 on Shea’s Ultimate American Quest
First Experienced During Quest On: September 5, 2024

Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, located on South Bass Island in Lake Erie, Ohio, stands as a towering tribute to peace and history. Rising 352 feet above the lake, this stunning Doric column commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie, a pivotal naval engagement during the War of 1812, where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry secured a crucial American victory. More than a symbol of military success, the memorial also honors the lasting peace between the United States, Great Britain, and Canada that followed the war.

Managed by the National Park Service, the memorial holds national value as a site of reflection, diplomacy, and shared history. Visitors can ascend to the observation deck for panoramic views and explore exhibits that delve into the war, the battle, and the legacy of peace. The site serves as a powerful reminder that former adversaries can become steadfast allies, and it continues to foster international friendship through educational programs and cultural events. Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial is not just a monument—it’s a call for unity and an enduring symbol of peace across borders.

The image shows a tall stone monument with a viewing platform at the top, set against a clear blue sky. In the foreground, a well-maintained grassy area is crossed by a paved path. Three flags are displayed on poles. Trees border the grassy area, leading to distant water.

Checking off another incredible National Treasure was only part of the joy of my day on Cass Island, which included a ferry, wineries, a Biergarten, a cave, a golf cart, and some hiking.
