Colorado

Colorado is a wild hymn to the American spirit—raw, untamed, and impossibly beautiful. Its peaks don’t just pierce the sky—they challenge it. This land of towering spires and painted deserts has always belonged to the bold. Indigenous tribes called it home long before settlers carved trails through its unforgiving heart. It’s a place where gold once lured dreamers to dig deep and where battles—both physical and ideological—etched their scars into the stone.

Wander its sacred spaces, the ones protected by the nation’s promise to preserve the soul of the land. Stand in the shadows of ancient dwellings or gaze across windswept dunes that whisper stories older than memory. These are not just monuments; they are the echoes of civilization, rebellion, and resilience.

Colorado doesn’t ask you to admire—it dares you to feel. To breathe in air that crackles with elevation and legend. To stare into canyons that seem to have no bottom and no end. It is a place for seekers, creators, and anyone brave enough to be changed by the land itself. Here, every rock, river, and ruin is a sentence in a story still being written.

I called Colorado home for 32 years before pursuing my dreams of travel. It will always be a destination where my heart races and becomes still in the same breath.

A sushi roll topped with various sauces is served on a black rectangular plate. There is a small white dish with dipping sauce in the background, placed on a wooden table.
Mexican-Sushi Restaurant??? You better believe it! My expectations were high for this unusual combination, and they delivered with a seriously spicy bang!
A single-story brick building with a green metal roof, featuring a set of stairs leading to the entrance, a mailbox, and a green bench outside. Sparse vegetation surrounds the Yuma Public Library.
Zipped into the Yuma Colorado Public Library to get some work done, and the librarian offered me an office in which to work!
A black Jeep towing a small, white teardrop camper is parked on a dirt area in an open grassy landscape under a partly cloudy sky in the Pawnee National Grasslands.
After a fantastic dinner and engaging conversation with Annika (and playing with Hugo!), I found a high bluff to connect to the Internet and spend the night.
A solitary, flat-topped butte stands in the middle of a vast, grassy plain under a partly cloudy sky in the Pawnee Buttes National Grasslands.
Hiking the Pawnee Buttes Trail was the first hike on this leg of my wanderings, and it held an unexpected and wonderful surprise at the end with a dinner invitation and new friends!
A black Jeep Rubicon is parked near the sign for Sligo Cemetery near Grover, CO in a grassy field under a cloudy sky.
On my way to explore the Pawnee National Grasslands, I stopped at the Sligo Cemetery, a lonely field on top of a wind-swept hill.
A modern library building with large windows and a sign labeled "Library" is surrounded by trees, bikes, and flower pots. The front area features benches and a small sculpture under a clear sky.
I'm back on my adventure after a few busy weeks in Colorado. Of course, it starts with hitting the post office and then working at a library as I roll eastward.
Amidst the snow-covered landscape, a wooden cabin nestles in the background of a Colorado forest. Pine trees on rolling hills are laden with snow, creating a serene winter 2023 atmosphere perfect for family gatherings. The overcast sky adds to this tranquil winter wonderland.
With a successful first leg of my adventure, I returned to Colorado to spend the Thanksgiving holiday at my Mom's house in the mountains and spend some time off the road.
Two people are seated at a Collision Brewery table, holding burgers and smiling at the camera. One wears a dark cap and green shirt, the other a blue hoodie. The table has empty trays, glasses, and one with a dark drink. Behind them, other diners chat as TV screens flicker in the background.
My boys and I have loved this place since it opened. The owners are fantastic, and the executive chef is amazingly creative. And you can't beat Jason's innovative, delicious beers!
Compact camper trailer hitched to a Jeep, parked by a lake at St. Vrain State Park under a clear blue sky. A red bicycle is mounted on the trailer's roof. A nearby picnic table with a metal shelter sits on a concrete pad, surrounded by dry grass and leafless trees.
Staying at this state park is the most convenient location for seeing my sons in Longmont and Boulder. Plus I managed to get a great site right on one of the ponds.
A black Jeep Wrangler is parked on gravel, towing a small gray teardrop trailer at a KOA site near Limon, Colorado. A bicycle is mounted atop the trailer. In the background, cozy cabins and leafless trees stretch beneath the clear blue sky—a perfect camping scene.
Needed a place for a night to stop and work on my way back to see family. KOA are usually a little on the pricy side, but they always have showers and electricity
Under a blue sky with wispy clouds, the wooden watchtower and brown building stand in open grassland. A solitary windmill marks the horizon at Amache National Historic Site, a path leading toward this poignant reminder of a darker chapter in U.S. history. Leafless trees scatter the background.
It's still hard to believe that at the beginning of World War II, the United States turned over 110,000 Japanese in concentration camps, including this one in southeastern Colorado.

I spent a few hours wandering this amazing national Park service. Reconstruction was very educational and fascinating. Absolutely worth the visit.
Lucy's taco stand in La Junta Colorado
Southwest Colorado is filled with amazing Mexican food. However, I am skilled at finding that which isn't!

I headed here when my Starlink decided not to work. I was surprised at the uncomfortable chairs. I was thankful that the Wi-Fi was decent so that I could quickly get some work accomplished.
A grassy field with a sign in the middle advertising the Picket Wire Trail - Dinosaur Tracksite.
Spent a wonderful day hiking into the Picket Wire Canyonlands to visit the largest dinosaur tracksite in North America.
A jeep parked next to a camper in Comanche National Grasslands.
The first major off-grid test of my nomad life, plus some glorious camping and hiking!
