With my belly stuffed with some delicious pastries, I headed out on foot to wander around and see what I could discover in this charming little town.

Right off the bat, I see something really cool. The local fire department is training what looks like new firefighters and repelling on buildings.

A red brick fire station in downtown Virginia, Minnesota, features several fire trucks parked outside. A ladder extends to the roof, where firefighters are visible. The American flag waves proudly near the station. Under a partly cloudy sky, a "Welcome" sign is seen on the right.

After watching the training for a little while, I headed over to the veterans Memorial Park. The sculpture in the park was spectacular and paid wonderful homage to the men and women who have served in our armed forces.

A sculpture depicting soldiers in action, sheltered by an eagle with outstretched wings, is surrounded by seven flagpoles displaying various flags. The flags are set against a backdrop of trees and a blue sky with scattered clouds. The pavement features a geometric pattern in front of the sculpture.
Plaque titled "The Story of... ‘SHOULDER TO SHOULDER EVEN THE FALLEN STAND TALL’" featuring a narrative about military sacrifice. Includes a story of a veteran carrying a rifle and the emotional and historical significance of camaraderie among servicemen across different wars.
A black stone monument dedicated to Iron County Veterans stands between two tall evergreen trees. It displays emblems of military branches above the inscription "TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED." Flags fly in the background against a partly cloudy sky, surrounded by green grass and trees.

I loved this sign for the old movie theater on the downtown strip.

The image shows a street view of a vintage cinema with a tall, retro-style sign reading "MACO." The theater's marquee displays "NOW STUDIOS OPEN." Surrounding the building are other storefronts, including a flower shop. The sky is partly cloudy, and there are street lamps with flower baskets.

One of the buildings that caught my attention was an abandoned building with a unique structure on one of the roof roofs. I never really could figure out what the extra metal building on top was, but I would guess it may have been a greenhouse or some thing similar.

A historic brick building with decorative arched windows and a crenelated rooftop. The structure features a mix of red and beige bricks with a prominent cornice. Some windows are boarded up, indicating age or disuse. The background shows a partly cloudy sky.
An old, abandoned red and brown brick building with tall windows, surrounded by empty streets. The sky is partly cloudy. A vintage turquoise truck is parked nearby. Power lines and a few small houses are visible in the background. The scene is quiet and deserted.
A tall, historic brick building stands under a sky with scattered clouds. It has a distinct architectural style and is surrounded by an industrial area. A lone green car is parked beside a metal shed on the left. A chain-link fence runs along the right side of the pavement.

I also headed into the county courthouse, hoping to find interesting artwork or cool architecture. I came up a bit short.

A historic courthouse with classical architecture, featuring large columns and intricate stonework, stands under a partly cloudy sky. The building is surrounded by well-maintained green lawns and flowering bushes. A flagpole is positioned in front of the courthouse.
Low-angle view of a historic building with ornate neoclassical architecture. It features tall Corinthian columns flanking a doorway with intricate decorative carvings. The year "1910" is inscribed above the entrance. A classic streetlamp stands nearby under a clear blue sky.
A spacious lobby featuring a central staircase with polished wooden railings. The ceiling is coffered with hanging lamps. Two illuminated bulletin boards are on each side, above wooden benches. The floor is tiled in a subtle pattern, and a wall clock is mounted on the left.
A display case showcases historical logging tools and photographs. Featured items include a large saw, a wooden mallet, an ancient horn, and rustic tools. Black-and-white photos depict loggers and forests. Text labels provide information. Skagit County Historical Society logo is visible.

Virginia, Minnesota, claims to have the largest loan in the world in a lake right next to its downtown. Of course, it’s a huge sculpture that absolutely would not cooperate and would not allow me to get a decent picture or video!

A serene lake with a small sculpture of a loon on the water. In the background, there's a park with trees and a gazebo to the left. A large beige building with windows is visible on the right side. The sky is partly cloudy, adding to the tranquil atmosphere of the scene.

Sometimes, it’s just fun to pound around a little town, checking out the old buildings, the murals that are painted on the walls, and whatever other interesting things might be around.

The entrance features a pathway and a small green bench on the right. A clear sky with clouds is visible above.

Quick History of Virginia, Minnesota

Virginia, Minnesota, nestled in the heart of the Mesabi Iron Range, is a town rich with history and character. The discovery of iron ore in the area drew miners and their families from all over the world, creating a melting pot of cultures and traditions that still influence the town today.
