A wooden sign titled "Old Bell-McKinley Monument" stands next to a stone monument resembling a chimney. The area, rich with trees, features two benches on gravel. Sunlight illuminates the McKinley Monument and highlights the historical marker within the serene park setting.
A wooden sign with the title "Old Bell Bronze Plaque" provides historical information about the Old Bell and Council Grove, noting a misattribution of historical events. It mentions a raid by Cheyennes and Arapahoes in 1868 and incorrect subsequent local actions. Trees and greenery are in the background.

Old Bell/McKinley Monument

The Old Bell, mounted on a wooden belfry at this site from 1866 to 1884, called children to school and families to church, celebrated the 4th of July, and alerted the town to major fires. After a 1884 windstorm collapsed the wooden belfry, vandals sledgehammered off the top portion of the Old Bell.

In 1881 the Old Bell rang continuously for half a day, announcing the death of martyred President James A. Garfield. This limestone monument, capped by the remnant of the Old Bell, was erected in 1901, in silent memory of martyred President William McKinley.

Originally named the McKinley Monument, over the years, it became more commonly known as the Old Bell Monument.
