Having a few weeks with my friends Mark and Kate was spectacular, with trips to New York City and crash courses on modern and contemporary art from a successful artist.
Stone wall with a small, arched alcove made of red bricks at the base, partially filled with stones. Overgrown greenery, including leaves and small yellow flowers, surrounds the structure like those near the historic Bay Furnace Ruins by Lake Superior, giving it an abandoned, rustic appearance.
With all that I've been learning about taconite and iron mining over the last few weeks, I decided to visit one more historic site connected with iron ore mining around Lake Superior.
A scenic view of Split Rock Lighthouse perched on a rocky cliff surrounded by lush green trees. The calm blue sea stretches out beneath the cliff, and a partly cloudy sky adds depth to the horizon. Leafy branches frame the right side of the image, enhancing the natural beauty.
Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world, and I was excited to learn more about this iconic structure and its impact on Lake Superior.
In downtown Virginia, a large bronze eagle with outstretched wings is perched on a sculpture of soldiers in action. Set on a stone platform and surrounded by flags, the scene is framed by trees under a partly cloudy Minnesota sky, with a paved walkway and two white planters adorning the foreground.
After filling up at Pep's Bakery, I decided to wander around the town of Virginia, Minnesota, to see if I could discover anything interesting or photo-worthy.
Judy Garland's Childhood Home. A charming white two-story house with a front balcony and small yard, nestled under a partly cloudy sky.
Years ago, I visited Dorthy's House and The Wizard of Oz museum in Liberal, Kansas, and it only seemed right to swing into the main character's childhood home.
A historic, beige stone courthouse with six columns stands at the end of a concrete walkway in Flandreau, SD. Flanked by manicured green lawns and tall, leafy trees, the Moody County Courthouse is set under an overcast sky that casts a soft light on its large windows with reddish frames.
I love wandering into beautiful buildings to see what's inside. Occasionally, you find pretty amazing art and architecture inside old courthouses scattered across the country. That's good.
A compact teardrop camper with its rear hatch open sits on a concrete pad in Flandreau City Park, with a black SUV nearby and blue picnic tables in the vicinity. Trees and grassy areas are in the background, making this spot in Flandreau, SD, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
Found a great city park right on the bank of the Big Sioux River. It was a great place to get some work done, and explore a little South Dakota town.
The Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, a red brick structure with a tall steeple, stands amidst green trees on a sunny day with a partly cloudy sky in Tabor, SD.
In the tiny town of Tabor, SD, stands a magnificent Gothic Revival architectural style church built by Czech immigrants in late 19th century. I love finding unexpected treasures.
A small trailer is set up next to a black Jeep on a grassy field with a tree providing shade, reminiscent of a peaceful park in Scotland. A blue van is parked in the background under a clear sky.
After a disappointing day in Yankton, SD, I needed a place with high-speed Internet to do a few days of work. I was hoping that Scotland would be interesting but...
A bronze sculpture depicting a person plowing with a horse takes center stage on a wooden cabinet at the Platte Valley Historical Society Museum. Capturing mid-movement action, signs urge "Please Do Not Touch," while framed documents adorn the wall behind, enriching the historical narrative.
After getting a little bit of work done, I decided to head into town and check out the local history. The Platte Valley Historical Society has done a fantastic job preserving area history.
A mural on a white brick building in Wilber, Nebraska, titled "Czech Capital of the USA," features Czech dancers, an American flag, and local landmarks. Decorative scrolls and symbols border the artwork. In front lies a cracked asphalt parking lot, adding to its rustic charm.
Wilbur is one of the many small towns I've rolled into, and I wish I had more time to explore it. However, having a few minutes to walk around was still cool and interesting.
Street view of a small Nebraska town, possibly Table Rock, with an old brick theater featuring a marquee sign. Next to it is a vacant storefront, while across the road sits a motel with an American flag. The partly cloudy sky adds to the quiet, deserted atmosphere.
After wandering around Dawson, NE, I committed to stopping in the next small town to see if it was faring any better, but unfortunately, Table Rock appears to be in decline too.
A historic cannon with large wooden wheels is displayed on a wooden platform, set on a grassy field with historical buildings in the background.
An unexpected hidden gem of a national historic site! Like all sites in the national Park system this one is unbelievably well done and even has a full-time blacksmith.
A mural of a muscular, red bull with white horns breaking through a brick wall is painted on the exterior of a brick building.
I definitely felt snappy for the photos after leaving the abandoned schoolhouse and all the cool things I saw on Highway 83 so I pulled in to Jetmore to see what I could see
A historic stone building with arched windows and a tower stands at a corner intersection under a clear blue sky.
I simply love stopping in cool little towns that have unique character. The bank building here is absolutely beautiful and needed to be photographed and added to my blog.
