Do you ever wake up with the thrill of adventure tingling in your bones? That was me one sunny morning as I set off to explore Fort Stanwick National Historic Park. The thought of stepping into history, mingling with school kids, and soaking in the beautiful outdoors was irresistible. In every corner, I knew there were stories waiting to be uncovered.

🌳 A Chance Encounter with History

As I drove along the road, my excitement grew. I arrived to find the park buzzing with lively energy, thanks to a 7th-grade field trip. The kids were eager, well-behaved, and engaged fully in the activities organized by the park service. It was heartwarming to see their faces light up as they learned about life in a revolutionary fort. My thoughts drifted back to how different life was back then—a time when being an enlisted man must have been incredibly difficult.

Each moment at Fort Stanwick felt special. I imagined the soldiers who stood where I was standing, bravely protecting the frontier during challenging times. This fort stands as a reminder of our nation’s past, a site where history indeed comes alive.

🎨 Unexpected Artistic Finds

After a while, my journey led me to Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, built back in 1895. I was captivated by the frosted glass windows, which seemed to dance with colors in the light. The grandeur of the old wooden staircase leading up to the balcony made my imagination run wild. I longed to take in the view from above. However, my plans hit a snag.

“It’s locked,” I muttered, disappointment creeping in. But, undeterred, I made my way to the nearby courthouse, its majestic columns towering above me.

🏛️ A Visit That Didn’t Go As Planned

The courthouse had a certain charm, with its grand rotunda beckoning me inside. My heart raced as I chatted with a deputy about stained glass and paintings that adorned the upper part of the building. Unfortunately, I learned that photographs were a no-go. “Well, dang it,” I sighed, but I didn’t let that stop my excitement. Even without photos, the experience of talking to someone with a connection to the building felt worth it.

In this blend of history, nature, and a bit of frustration, I savored every moment. Exploring Fort Stanwick taught me that sometimes, the journey is more important than the destination—or the pictures you end up with.

As my day wrapped up, I found myself reflecting on the places we visit and the stories that envelop them. There’s a magic in stepping into history, even if it comes with a few locked doors. It reminds us that there’s always more to explore and more tales to learn. So whether you’re venturing into a national park or wandering through a quaint town, keep your eyes open. You never know what hidden gems you’ll find along the way.
