Homestead National Historical Park

National Treasure Visited #9 on Shea’s Ultimate American Quest
First Experienced During Quest On: October 26, 2023

Homestead National Historical Park in Nebraska preserves the site of one of the most influential laws in American history — the Homestead Act of 1862. Signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the act allowed American citizens and immigrants to claim up to 160 acres of federal land, provided they lived on and improved the land for at least five years. This groundbreaking legislation shaped the settlement of the western United States, leading to the expansion of agriculture and the development of new communities.

The park includes the original Freeman homestead, where Daniel Freeman is recognized as one of the first people to file a claim under the Homestead Act. Visitors can explore the Homestead Heritage Center, which features exhibits on the hardships and triumphs of homesteaders. The park also includes a restored tallgrass prairie, walking trails, and the Palmer-Epard Cabin — an authentic homesteader’s home. Homestead National Historical Park is a tribute to the courage and resilience of those seeking a new life through homesteading.
