Mulberry Bend Overlook and Nature Trail

Visited on: Thursday, July 18, 2024

As I headed toward the Missouri River, I saw the sign for the Mulberry Bend Overlook. I expected a bit of a rest stop and perhaps a slightly elevated place to look out over the river in the bridge.

I was quite happy when I saw that I had stumbled on a short nature trail that would take me to a higher vantage point from which I could see the Riverbend and the bridge.

I headed up the sidewalk, admiring the crazy number of wildflowers that were blooming all over the place.

A wooden fence borders a path next to a grassy hill covered with native plants and wildflowers. A brown sign reads, "Native Plantings, Please Stay on Sidewalk." The sky is clear and blue, adding to the vibrant, natural setting.

I reached the landing with multiple signs and a great view of the river and thought I had reached the end of what I would be seeing. However, another sign pointed to a nature trail, and I took off to see what I could see.

Two informational signs overlook a scenic landscape with green fields, a meandering river, and distant trees under a clear blue sky. The signs contain diagrams and text. A stone bench is positioned nearby, surrounded by tall grass and wildflowers.
View of a wide river with sandbars, bordered by lush green trees and grass. A paved road runs alongside, crossing the river via a bridge. The sky is clear blue, and wildflowers can be seen in the foreground, enhancing the scenic landscape.
A detailed information board titled "Mulberry Bend Nature Trail" displays a map and description of the trail. There are sections on trail data, preparation tips, and rules, all set against a green background with an aerial view of the forested area.

I wish I had thought to use one of my trail map apps or at least Google Maps, but I decided to shoot a little video. At the end of it, I ended up back at the platform where I started because the trails shown on the map are only part of what exists in this area, and I seem to have missed one of the segments.

After a wonderful little hike, I headed into South Dakota and continued my adventure.
