Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

National Treasure Visited #23 on Shea’s Ultimate American Quest
First Experienced During Quest On: July 16, 2024

The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail traces the legendary expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1804 to 1806, commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson after the Louisiana Purchase. Stretching over 4,900 miles through 16 states, from Pennsylvania to the Pacific Coast in Oregon, the trail follows the explorers’ route as they mapped the uncharted West, documented new species, and established relationships with Native American tribes.

Today, the trail stands as a testament to American exploration, scientific curiosity, and cultural exchange. Managed by the National Park Service, it invites travelers to experience diverse landscapes—rivers, plains, mountains, and forests—much like the Corps of Discovery did over 200 years ago. Along the way, visitors can explore museums, interpretive centers, and preserved historic sites that bring this pivotal journey to life.

The Lewis and Clark Trail is more than a route; it’s a living history lesson. As a national site, it holds immense value by preserving the spirit of exploration, honoring Indigenous cultures, and offering insight into the early development of the United States. It reminds us how curiosity and courage can shape a nation.
