Discovering the Hidden Gems of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Have you ever felt the thrill of adventure mixed with a touch of nostalgia? That’s exactly what I experienced on my journey through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. From rich history to stunning landscapes, this trip turned into a delightful exploration that I’m eager to share.
🌄 Digging into History at Quincy Mine
My adventure began with a rainy night, but when morning came, I was eager to dive deep—literally!
I found myself at the Quincy Mine, part of the Keweenaw National Historic Park. The tour started on a cog railroad, taking us 2,000 feet into the earth. It was both eerie and exhilarating to think that, once, this place bustled with life as miners extracted copper from deep below. T
he deep, dark tunnels echoed with stories of the past, and as I wandered through the rusty remnants of railroad cars, I couldn’t help but feel connected to those who worked hard here. This wasn’t just a mine; it was a piece of living history.
🍴 Culinary Surprises Await
After the mine, I headed to Copper Bay, where my taste buds were in for a treat. I couldn’t resist trying Korean pulled pork barbecue tacos paired with cucumber kimchi from the famous Roaming Palate.
The explosion of flavors surprised me—it was a twist I hadn’t expected to find in such a remote location. Each bite was more interesting than the last, making it clear that this region has its own identity, even in food.
🏞️ Embracing Nature’s Beauty
No adventure would be complete without soaking in the natural scenery. As I journeyed further, I stopped at the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse along the shores of Lake Superior. The waves crashed against the rocks, a rhythmic dance that brought a sense of peace. Standing there, I reflected on how fortunate I was to experience such beauty, and I savored the moments spent admiring the lighthouse, a beacon of history.
🗺️ Exploring Unique Attractions
My travels also took me off the beaten path. While driving down M-38, a sign caught my eye, promising a quirky junk art sculpture garden. Curiosity pulled me in, and I found over a hundred sculptures made from salvaged materials.
It was a delight to wander through this unexpected treasure, showcasing creativity and charm in every corner. Who knew an art garden could be such a fun detour?
🌌 Tales of Travel and Farewell
As I made my way through the Upper Peninsula, I also visited the Bay Furnace Ruins, remnants of a once-thriving iron settlement. After a long day of driving, I finally settled in for the night at a campground near the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino. With a few days to unwind and tackle some tech issues, the future felt bright. Yet, saying goodbye to Lake Superior brought a bittersweet end to my adventure—a reminder that while the journey may pause, the memories will last.
The charm of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula left a lasting impression on me. From historical sites to culinary surprises, my trip showcased the essence of exploration. Every moment was a revelation, each experience enriching my understanding of this remarkable region. I left with a heart full of stories and a longing to return to this beautiful part of the world.
