Minnesota

Minnesota, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” is a state defined by its natural beauty, deep history, and vibrant culture. Its sweeping forests, countless lakes, and expansive prairies have shaped both the landscape and the people who call it home. The state played a pivotal role in America’s westward expansion and has long been a crossroads of cultures—Native American nations, Scandinavian immigrants, and African American communities have all left indelible marks.

Minnesota was at the heart of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, a tragic and complex chapter in American history that still resonates today. Its importance in the fur trade era, iron ore mining, and logging boom also helped fuel the nation’s economic rise. Today, visitors can explore national sites that preserve and interpret these layers of history, offering insights into both conflict and cooperation.

Beyond its past, Minnesota is a leader in education, environmental stewardship, and the arts. The Twin Cities serve as cultural hubs, while small towns showcase Midwestern charm. Whether wandering through preserved historical lands or hiking the rugged northern wilderness, the state offers a profound connection to America’s story and spirit.

Dispersed Camping Near Two Harbors copy
To say I enjoyed myself with my friends Lynn and Erik would be a monstrous understatement; leaving was difficult, but I had a lighthouse and waterfalls to visit on Lake Superior.
A man with curly hair and glasses stands outdoors near trees, a black SUV, and a small teardrop-style trailer, enjoying some dispersed camping near Two Harbors.
After visiting Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls, I slipped into the forest to find a place to get a good night's sleep without spending any money.
A scenic view of Split Rock Lighthouse perched on a rocky cliff surrounded by lush green trees. The calm blue sea stretches out beneath the cliff, and a partly cloudy sky adds depth to the horizon. Leafy branches frame the right side of the image, enhancing the natural beauty.
Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world, and I was excited to learn more about this iconic structure and its impact on Lake Superior.
A white wolf lies on lush green grass, facing the camera with its mouth slightly open, in a woodland area. Surrounded by trees and rocks, this serene scene echoes the natural beauty celebrated at the International Wolf Center. A portion of another animal is visible in the foreground.
One of the things I had to do while I was in Ely, Minnesota, was visit the wolves. These majestic creatures have always captivated me, and it was mesmerizing being so close to them.
A person with curly hair and glasses snaps a selfie while climbing the Silver Cliffs. Dressed in a gray long-sleeve shirt, they sport a surprised expression. Below lies a paved path, informational signs, and a small platform amid lush greenery with the shimmering Lake Superior in the background.
Since I met Lynn and Eric on a climbing trip with Erik's brother, it should come as no surprise that we had to go and find an absolutely spectacular place to get up on the rock.
Tall rock face with vertical striations, featuring a variety of brown and gray hues in the Boundary Waters terrain. Sparse green vegetation grows in crevices. The surface is weathered, with dark streaks and some moss. Sunlight illuminates the upper left corner, creating a soft glow.
One of the fantastic things I was introduced to while visiting Lynn and Erik was canoeing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. And we saw pictographs by the water!
A man smiles for a selfie in front of a blue house in Ely, Minnesota. Behind him, a black SUV is hitched to a small, teardrop-shaped trailer.
Rolled into Ely Minnesota to spend some time with my good friends and climbing partners, Erik and Lynn. What a treat to learn about this area from two amazing humans!
Ely Minnesota
What an amazing couple of days I had on my way to a friends' home in Ely, MN. I learned about mining, the Bois Forte Ojibwe, and the incomparable Hollywood icon Judy Garland.
A grounded vintage yellow train caboose sits on tracks beside a green and white building, possibly the Tower Train Museum. The sky is partly cloudy, with a few trees in view. In the foreground, a paved area features some grass and a yellow parking block.
Just my luck; when I rolled through Tower, Minnesota, looking forward to checking out another train museum, it was closed. I guess I'll have to come back someday!
Bois Forte Heritage Center features a small entrance and a large circular street art piece. Encircled by green grass and bushes under a blue sky with clouds, it includes a red bench near the entrance with trees in the background.
On my way to stay with friends and Ely, Minnesota, I detoured a little bit to learn about the Bois Forte Ojibwe, a Native American people who settled in the Great Lakes region.
The Laurentian Divide
I pulled over at a rest stop to stretch my legs and eat an apple (with peanut butter, of course!) and ended up learning more geography about northern Minnesota.
In downtown Virginia, a large bronze eagle with outstretched wings is perched on a sculpture of soldiers in action. Set on a stone platform and surrounded by flags, the scene is framed by trees under a partly cloudy Minnesota sky, with a paved walkway and two white planters adorning the foreground.
After filling up at Pep's Bakery, I decided to wander around the town of Virginia, Minnesota, to see if I could discover anything interesting or photo-worthy.
A view of a street showcases Pep's Bake Shop, an Italian bakery, nestled in a charming brick building. Adjacent is a flower shop, adding to the quaint atmosphere. Outdoor chairs and tables invite you to sit and enjoy your treats from Pep's Bake Shop.
Waking up hungry, I headed into Virginia, MN, to check out a bakery that I'd been told had some wonderful things to try. It did me right!
A black SUV is towing a small, teardrop-shaped camper through the lush greenery of West Two Rivers Campground, surrounded by tall trees and vibrant grass.
After super busy day, I pulled into this campground just to get a shower and a quick night of sleep before heading to Ely, Minnesota and my friends Erik and Lynn.
A small stone castle with two round towers and a bright red entrance stands proudly like a museum nestled among tall trees in Minnesota. The foreground features a cracked asphalt parking lot with a wheelchair accessible space, benches flanking the entrance, and several trash bins to the right.
There is so much to learn about mining in the United States, and this was an excellent place to start, especially with all of the big heavy equipment they had to explore.
A meal on a table includes two tacos with meat, onions, and cilantro on foil to the left and a plate of salad with various toppings, including cheese, to the right. A cup with a dark beverage, an empty plate, a fork, and napkins are visible. A person is seated with only legs visible below the table.
After visiting the Judy Garland museum, I was definitely hungry and needed some Mexican food. This place was in a strip mall nearby and mostly filled the bill.
