A man wears a green cap with "The Hiking CEO Shea Oliver" logo, surrounded by cacti in the Sonoran Desert with rocky hills behind. Inset photos capture him savoring a sandwich, and navigating a rocky path. Text reads, "Shea’s Rapid Recap #33, Back on the Road for 2025 and in the Sonoran Desert.
I'm back on the road and to the Sonoran desert after leaving Colorado and driving for two days, with a few stops along the way to eat and explore the El Malpais National Monument.
A small, rustic stone chapel with bell-shaped arches under a clear blue sky. Nestled in Quemado, NM, the building is surrounded by a dry, grassy landscape and leafless trees. A dirt path leads to its entrance, and a wooden bench is nearby. The scene captures the serene essence of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
I'm so accustomed to being drawn in by the creative architecture of churches and the massive nature of cathedrals that something like this seems to catch my eye in its simplicity.
Scenic view of La Ventana Natural Arch in a rugged canyon landscape. This stunning feature is part of El Malpais National Monument, surrounded by steep cliffs in shades of tan and orange. In the foreground, green trees thrive among scattered rocks under a clear blue sky, enhancing the arch's grandeur.
Although this wasn't much of a hike, I knew I wanted to stop and see one of the largest natural arches in New Mexico while I passed through the El Malpais National Monument.
Under the clear blue sky with wispy clouds, the sandstone bluffs at El Malpais National Monument create a breathtaking landscape. The arid terrain features light brown and dark orange tones that highlight the textured, weathered rocks, while shadows emphasize their rugged contours and natural arches.
I didn't realize that I'd be driving through the El Malpais National Monument as I headed toward Arizona, but when I saw the signs, I knew I could add another national site to my list.
A black Jeep is parked in a gravel lot at Dancing Eagle RV, towing a small teardrop camper. The sun casts long shadows on the ground. In the background, low red and brown buildings, a few other parked vehicles, and a clear blue sky complete the serene scene.
After an absolutely exhausting drive that included 5° temperatures, freezing fog, snow, and ice on the interstate, and high wind warnings, I totally crashed here for the night.
Nighttime view of a Blake's Lotaburger in Las Vegas, NM, with a well-lit exterior. The building showcases a red and white color scheme, prominent signage, and the address number 2302. The parking lot is partially visible with a few cars parked, while a streetlamp illuminates the area.
With only one night in New Mexico, I had to get something with green chilis. The local chain, Blake's, was just the thing to get a burger covered with delicious hatch green chilies.
Amidst rugged mountainous terrain lies the ruins of Van Patten's Mountain Camp. Scattered rocks and dry grass surround the crumbling walls. Sunlight casts a warm glow on the rocky cliffs, while shadows accentuate the jagged landscape.
